Description: The Valletta 2018 Foundation is driving cultural, social and economic regeneration in Valletta and the Maltese Islands through collaboration, exchange and innovative practice. The Valletta 2018 Foundation is responsible for the European Capital of Culture programmein Malta. The programme consists of events and projects developed with various local and international communities. It has been developed organically in preparation for the year 2018. Throughout the year of 2018 Valletta was awarded the European Capital of Culture. As part of having a sustainable approach to the award, Global Green Event was brought on board to implement a sustainability policy that ran throughout the year of 2018, and beyond, on all events and functions happening within the capital city of Valletta.

Valletta 2018 Foundation Event Sustainability Policy

Valletta 2018 is focused on increasing awareness regarding sustainability and reducing environmental impacts. As an event organiser working with Valletta 2018, there are certain points to comply with:

  1. Valletta 2018 operates a “Leave No Trace” philosophy. Every event must leave the event site as clean (if not cleaner) than on arrival.
  2. Packaging should be reduced at source. Don’t use or promote products that have packaging, and reduce all packaging wherever possible. Leave a legacy with suppliers.
  3. Support the “Bring your own container” initiative for food and drinks. Vendors must be willing to serve participants in their own drinking bottle/cooler/bowl/plate! Dishwashing facilities for participants must be provided.
  4. Recycling and composting bins must be present at every event. It will help to divert as many resources as possible from landfill, resources are precious and Malta is a small island! “Waste” collection companies must agree to dispose of waste correctly at Wasteserv. 
  5. All food vendors and bars must only use compostable disposables. All food waste and paper disposables must be added to the compost bins. This compost can be sent to WasteServ.
  6. Cigarette Butt bins are to be provided throughout the event site, portable pocket ashtrays can be handed out as optional.
  7. Promote conscious transport options. Use public transport, shuttle buses, park and ride initiatives, carpooling, cycling or walking.
  8. Drinking water in single-use plastic bottles is prohibited during events. Water must be provided in refillable containers or compostable disposables.
  9. Use only biodegradable or organic washing products. Reduce the amount of chemicals you are using, ask vendors and suppliers to do the same.
  10. All waste water should be contained. Grey water should be captured into containers and deposited in agreed sewerage systems.
  11. Portable toilets should use ecological (enzyme based) products rather than the traditional, formaldehyde-based chemicals. 
  12. Reduce energy consumption. Ask suppliers to use LED lighting wherever possible, look into power sourcing alternatives. Choose low impact materials in procurement.
  13. Employ cleaners to work throughout the event, these can be volunteers, clean ups run by participants of the event or paid workers. A clean floor stays a clean floor.
  14. Contribute to the local community. Give back to the local area in any way you can, source workers locally, buy local, use local goods. 
  15. Build awareness. Get participants, suppliers, crew, vendors engaged in what you are aiming to achieve. Publish your sustainability policies pre-event, communicate your intentions and initiatives. Use social media, national media, press.
  16. Create a Legacy. Focus on education throughout, make educational boards for the event, employ sustainability crew to promote your initiatives, get participants to share their experiences and leave empowered and inspired. Aim to be the greenest event of Valletta 2018.

17. Report, review and share. Announce the events achievements, review systems for improvement and refinement, share your learnings.
